Popular Services

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced today it will distribute free tetanus shots to people aged five and older across New York City starting Monday, February 25. This marks the fifth consecutive year that the CDC has distributed free tetanus vaccines in the city.

New York City Health + Hospitals Corporation (H+HC), the largest health care provider in New York state, has been providing free tetanus vaccines since 2008. H+HC provides immunization services to over 2 million residents annually through more than 700 locations throughout the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island and Westchester County.

The vaccine protects against Tetanus Toxoid, a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium Tetani. Tetanus occurs most often in adults, particularly those involved in work requiring physical exertion, such as farming, construction, forestry, fishing, gardening, and household chores. In addition, anyone working around animals could contract tetanus.

Tetanus is preventable with a single dose of tetanus toxoid vaccine. A booster shot is recommended every 10 years to maintain immunity.

To ensure access to vaccinations during flu season, the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) has partnered with the American Red Cross to provide free flu shots to uninsured individuals who do not have insurance coverage for routine medical visits. DOHMH will offer flu vaccination clinics at three sites in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Manhattan starting Friday, February 22 and continuing through Sunday, February 24. More information about where and when to receive a flu shot is available online at www.nyc.gov/flu.

In addition to offering free tetanus shots, the CDC has launched several programs aimed at increasing awareness among parents and caregivers of children under age 13 about how to protect themselves and their children from seasonal influenza. These include:

• FluVaxNow – A program that allows healthcare providers to administer the flu vaccine directly into patients’ upper arms without needles. FluVaxNow uses a special needleless syringe that delivers the vaccine into the muscle tissue just beneath the skin.

Brooklyn Heights Promenade

The Brooklyn Heights promenade is a pedestrian bridge over the BQE that connects the neighborhood to downtown Brooklyn. At nearly 2 miles long, it's the longest continuous sidewalk along the East River waterfront. A popular destination for locals and visitors alike, the promenade offers stunning views of Lower Manhattan.

NYC Programs & Initiatives

The city health department announced today that it has approved a new vaccine booster for anyone aged 12 and older. This includes those who received the initial seasonal influenza vaccination during the 2017–2018 season. New Yorkers are encouraged to receive their second dose of the vaccine as soon as possible.

In addition to protecting against the virus that causes COVID-19, the seasonal flu vaccine helps prevent illnesses caused by circulating strains of the virus. Flu activity continues across the region, including in New York City. For more information about how to obtain the flu vaccine, please visit nyc.gov/flu.
